The making of this piece took over 30 hours. It is a slow design. It is difficult, it is intricate and there are gaps in the embroidery which readjust once the piece is taken off the 'adda' (frame). The hand embroidery must be tight and precise to do justice to the pillow design. This is one of the most difficult pieces I have had to embroider. I used to sit and watch my father for hours as he sat on the ground and embroidered his 'adda' (frame) with a box of needles, threads, beads and fabric. Often he worked for days on the same piece. It was beautiful to see the embroidery evolve into a design. I practiced with him until I started hand embroidery on my own. I was mistaken when I thought this piece was simple. It requires unwavering patience and concentration to create such a meticulous weave. The embroidery cannot be too thick, or thin. It cannot have gaps or be too big. I am from Jodhpur. In the desert, I make paper mâché vases using old cardboard boxes, water, and other recyclable materials. This is a traditional craft that connects me to my culture. I tear cardboard into small pieces and mix it with water to make a soft pulp. After moulding it into shape, I must dry the vases carefully to keep their form. This drying process requires great care. Once they are dry, I paint the vases in earthy colors done by hand, which reflect our rich culture. No two pieces are the same; each has its own identity.
